FreshBooks Alternatives Worth Considering
People look for FreshBooks alternatives for three distinct reasons, and each points at a different product. Work out which one is yours first.

On this page
Nobody searches for alternatives to a product they are happy with. Before comparing anything, it is worth naming why you are looking - because the three common reasons point at three different products, and picking from a generic list is how people replace one imperfect fit with another.
Which problem is yours?
| You are leaving because | Look at |
|---|---|
| It costs too much for what you use | Zoho Invoice (free) or Wave (free) |
| You hit the five billable clients limit | Wave or Zoho Invoice — neither prices on client count |
| You need proposals and contracts too | Bonsai |
| You bill hourly and want tracking built in | Harvest |
If the problem is price
FreshBooks starts at $23 a month, or $276 a year, before add-ons. That is entirely reasonable for accounting software and hard to justify if you are using it to send eight invoices a month.
Zoho Invoice is free, permanently, with no limits published on its product page - and it is not a stripped free tier. It was a paid product for thirteen years before Zoho removed the price. Quotes, invoices, online payments, reminders, a client portal, time and expense capture, reports, apps across web, mobile and desktop.
The trade: it bills, it does not keep books. If you were using FreshBooks' accounting side, this replaces half the product.
Wave replaces more. Its free Starter plan covers unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records. Wave earns on payment processing - 2.9% + $0.60 per card transaction - and on a $19 a month Pro plan that adds automatic bank import, receipt capture and automated reminders.
The trade: if your clients pay by card and your invoices are small and frequent, do the arithmetic. Twenty $200 card payments a month is roughly $128 in fees, which is more than the FreshBooks plan you are leaving. If clients pay by transfer, this concern largely disappears.
If the problem is the client limit
This is the most common reason, and the most frustrating, because it is uncorrelated with how much you earn. FreshBooks Lite allows five billable clients. A designer doing twenty $300 jobs is pushed to the $43 Plus plan while earning far less than a consultant sitting comfortably on Lite with three retainers.
Both free options above solve this outright: neither Wave nor Zoho Invoice prices on client count. If your work is many small clients, that is not a downgrade - it is a pricing model that matches your business rather than fighting it.
If the problem is that you need more
Sometimes the issue is not FreshBooks being too much, but too narrow.
Bonsai adds the part almost every invoicing tool ignores: proposals and contracts, signed electronically, flowing into projects and then invoices without retyping. If you were maintaining contract templates separately, this consolidates a real workflow.
Billed annually, Basic is $9, Essentials $19, Premium $29 and Elite $49 per user per month. Read that carefully - invoicing, proposals and contracts start at Essentials, not Basic. Your real entry price is $19 per user per month.
Harvest comes at it from time. Track hours, turn them into an invoice, take payment through Stripe on the Teams plan. Free for one seat and two projects; $9 a seat monthly or $108 annually after that.
The two-project free limit is binary - perfect for two retainer clients, useless for six concurrent jobs. And Harvest bills paid plans partly on usage, including additional invoices, projects, clients and tasks.
Where FreshBooks still wins
Worth saying plainly, because a page like this has an obvious bias.
If you want genuine accounting depth in one product - expenses set against income, a clean handover to an accountant, payroll available as an add-on - FreshBooks is the more complete product than anything above. Wave covers bookkeeping but is a lighter tool; Zoho Invoice does not cover it at all.
And if you bill a small number of clients well inside the tier caps, the five-client limit that drives everyone else away is simply not your problem, and the reasons to leave mostly evaporate.
Before you migrate
- Check what the export contains. Invoices and clients usually come out cleanly. Transaction history, attachments and payment records often do not. Ask specifically.
- Do not move mid-tax-year without a plan. Split records across two systems is exactly the mess you are trying to avoid; either move at a year boundary or keep the old account readable until the return is filed.
- Check regional support for payment methods and tax handling where you and your clients are.
- Run both for one cycle. Send one month's invoices from the new tool while the old one is still live. It costs a month and catches problems that a trial never surfaces.

Questions people ask
What is the best free alternative to FreshBooks?
Wave, if you want invoicing and bookkeeping together - its free Starter plan covers unlimited invoices and bookkeeping records, earning instead on payment processing. Zoho Invoice, if you only need billing - it is free with no limits published on its product page.
Why do freelancers leave FreshBooks?
Most commonly the billable-client limit. The entry plan allows five clients, which is uncorrelated with income, so freelancers doing many small jobs are pushed to the $43 plan while earning relatively little. Price generally, and needing capabilities FreshBooks does not have, account for most of the rest.
Is there an alternative that includes contracts and proposals?
Bonsai, which treats proposal, contract, project and invoice as one chain. Note that those features begin on its Essentials plan at $19 per user per month billed annually, not the $9 Basic plan.
