Most cookie policies describe categories in the abstract. This one lists what this particular site actually sets, because that is the only version that is useful to you.

Read alongside our privacy policy.

Cookies and storage we set ourselves

NameTypePurposeLifetime
themeLocal storageRemembers whether you chose the light or dark theme, so the site does not flash the wrong one on your next visit.Until you clear it
lang-choiceLocal storageRemembers the language you chose, so we never override it with automatic detection again.Until you clear it
lang-auto-doneSession storageRecords that the automatic language offer has already run once this session, so it cannot loop.Until you close the tab
googtransCookieTells the translation service which language to render the page in. Only set when you pick a language other than English.1 year, or until you switch back
sp_csrfCookieA security token that protects any form submission from cross-site request forgery. Contains a random value only.2 hours

None of these track you, and none of them are sent anywhere except googtrans, which the translation service reads. The first three never leave your browser at all.

Cookies set by third parties

These appear only when the corresponding feature is switched on for this installation. You can verify which are active on any page by opening your browser's developer tools and looking at the storage panel.

Google Analytics

Set when a Google Analytics measurement ID is configured. Google Analytics 4 typically sets _ga and _ga_<container>, which distinguish one browser from another so that visits can be counted without identifying you. Lifetime is up to two years.

Google AdSense

Set when advertising is enabled. Google and its advertising partners may set cookies to deliver ads, cap how often you see the same one, and measure performance. Where you are in a region that requires consent for personalised advertising, Google's consent mechanisms apply, and you can decline personalisation without losing access to the site.

You can review and change how Google personalises ads at adssettings.google.com, and read what data Google receives from sites using its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Google Translate

Loaded only when you actively switch the page into another language. It may set its own cookies as part of delivering the translation. Stay in English and the script is never requested.

Affiliate networks

When you click an outbound link to a software vendor that is part of an affiliate programme, the destination site — not us — may set a cookie so that a later sign-up is attributed to the referral. This happens on their domain, under their policy, and only after you have chosen to leave our site.

What we do not use

  • No fingerprinting or device-identification scripts.
  • No session recording, heat maps or scroll tracking.
  • No social media tracking pixels or share-button trackers.
  • No cross-site advertising cookies of our own.
  • No email or newsletter tracking pixels.

Automatic language detection

If your browser asks for a language we support, the site offers that language on your first visit and shows a notice saying the page has been machine translated, with a one-click way back to the English original. Once you have chosen a language — including choosing English — that choice is remembered and detection never runs again.

The URL never changes when you switch language. The English version remains the page that search engines see and index.

How to control cookies

In your browser. Every modern browser lets you block or delete cookies, either entirely or per site, and clear local storage:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies / Site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

Blocking cookies from this site costs you very little: the theme and language settings stop being remembered, and forms protected by the security token may stop working. All of the content remains readable.

Opting out of advertising personalisation. Use Google's ad settings, the YourAdChoices opt-out for the US, or Your Online Choices in Europe.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. We do not use tracking of our own that could ignore these signals. Third-party services honour them according to their own policies.

Changes

When the set of cookies used here changes, this table changes with it. The date at the top of the page reflects the last review.
