NordPass Free: Unlimited Passwords, Unclear Devices
Unlimited storage, no item cap - and a pricing page that says two different things about whether the free plan works on more than one device.
On this page
Most of these pages exist because a vendor documents something people have not noticed. This one exists because a vendor documents two things that cannot both be true.
The contradiction
On NordPass's own pricing page:
- The comparison table marks "Access on multiple devices" as a feature not included for Free.
- The FAQ further down the same page states that the free plan includes automatic sync across devices.
Those are opposite answers to the single most important question anyone has about a free password manager, published a few hundred pixels apart.
We are not going to guess which one is current. What we can say is that you should not commit a vault to NordPass Free on the assumption that it syncs, without testing it first — install it on a second device, add an item on one, and see whether it appears on the other. Five minutes, and it settles a question the vendor's own page does not.
Where this matters
Device sync is not a nice-to-have in this category; it is most of the product.
A password manager that lives only on your laptop means every mobile login is typed by hand from a screen you are reading across the desk. People do not keep doing that. They start reusing a password they can remember, which undoes the entire point of having a manager at all.
LastPass makes this restriction explicit — one device type, computers or mobile — and people leave over it, but at least they know. An unclear answer is harder to plan around than a restrictive one.
What is clearly included
The unambiguous parts of the free plan are genuinely decent:
- Unlimited password storage, with no item cap stated.
- Autosave and autofill.
- Secure storage.
- The ability to set up multi-factor authentication on the account.
On raw capacity that matches Bitwarden and Proton Pass. NordPass is not running a crippled tier with a password count designed to annoy you.
What is clearly Premium
| Feature | Free |
|---|---|
| Password sharing | Premium only |
| Data Breach Scanner | Premium only |
| Password Health | Premium only |
| NordPass Authenticator | Premium only |
| File Attachments | Premium only |
| Emergency Access | Not stated |
Sharing is the one households hit first. The moment two people need the same streaming login, a free NordPass vault stops being a shared household arrangement and becomes a personal one with a lot of reading aloud.
Emergency Access being unmarked is the more serious gap. It is listed in the comparison without the Free column filled in, so whether a free vault can ever be reached by someone else is simply not answered. Given what that feature is for, that is worth asking NordPass directly rather than inferring. The wider question is in who gets into your vault if you cannot.
Getting out is thinner than getting in
Worth knowing before you commit, because it is the lowest score we have given in this category.
Our NordPass exit report puts it at 19 out of 30, and the reason is absence rather than restriction: CSV is the only documented export format. No encrypted archive, no direct app-to-app transfer, and no statement of which item types the file contains.
NordPass does warn, to its credit, that you should never send an exported password file over email or untrusted channels. But a single plaintext route means the dangerous moment is unavoidable whenever you move.
The fair summary
NordPass Free gives you unlimited storage and a working autofill experience, which is more than several competitors. It is held back by documentation that does not answer two questions that decide whether it fits your life: does it sync, and can anyone else ever reach it.
Neither is a flaw in the software. Both are reasons to test before you trust, and to prefer a free tier whose terms you can read without ambiguity if that choice is open to you.

Questions people ask
How many passwords can you store on NordPass Free?
NordPass describes the free plan as including unlimited password storage, with no numeric cap stated. On item count alone the free tier is as generous as Bitwarden's or Proton Pass's.
Does NordPass Free work on multiple devices?
NordPass's own pricing page says both yes and no. The comparison table marks "Access on multiple devices" as not included for Free, while the FAQ on the same page states that Free includes automatic sync across devices. We could not resolve which is current, so test it before relying on it.
What does NordPass Premium add?
Password sharing, the Data Breach Scanner, Password Health, the NordPass Authenticator and File Attachments are all marked as not included on Free. The sharing restriction is the one most households run into first.
Does NordPass Free include emergency access?
The pricing page lists Emergency Access without marking the Free column, so the answer is not established by the source. Since emergency access decides whether anyone can reach your vault if you cannot, that is a gap worth confirming directly with NordPass before depending on it.
Is NordPass Free a good choice?
On storage, yes. The uncertainty about multi-device sync is the problem - a password manager that may or may not reach your phone is hard to commit to. If that matters to you, Bitwarden and Proton Pass both document device access clearly on their free tiers.
